"... Nighttime in the city," Erin answers after a long moment's thought. "Which is a bit fucked when I think about it. The monsters come crawling out of their holes at night to hunt and play, but there's something about it. The music, the sound, the beat of a place that rests but never sleeps."

"Tell me about it. What you remember - tell me so you can refresh your memory."

So it remains in someone else's memory too.

God we've got so much shit to work on.

"...It's genuinely hard to describe. If a picture is worth a thousand words, how many would I need to spend just to describe the scents, the sounds?" Erin's voice takes on a wistful quality. "...From high up, New Avalon at night is a portrait of lights girdled by fog, like a city in the sky. Down low the fog muffles the world, cut through by the lights of cars and the calls of the people. Gunshots in the distance would unnerve me more if I didn't know that might be my people holding the line, but closer, so much closer, you might pass by a bookstore that only opens after midnight, or get hailed on the street by a guy with a street cart who will, inexplicably, make you the best fucking kebab you've had at any time of day. Anyone out that late at night is weird, so you get to see and hear all kinds of fashion, music, walk past people staggering out of the nightclubs eight drinks in and trying not to die. The trains rumble through the haunted subways beneath your feet, making the streets vibrate as they go, catlike and listening..."

She's quiet, listening to Erin's description, letting it weave an idea of a place she's never been in her mind. A full city, frightening and yet lovely, full of life. The warmth in Erin's tone is enough to color it with love, with care. A place she wants to experience, if only to understand that affection in full.

Perhaps it is not an ideal place to long for, but it is still the place Erin cherishes, and Helena cannot fault her for wanting what she knows.

"A network of different heartbeats, discordant and yet working as one..."

The words are a murmur, slipping out of her while she contemplates.

"Yeah," Erin murmurs. "Just as the hive remembers what the bee can never know, the city will teach and love you, if you know how to listen. Each one is a different person, both equal to and greater than its people."

[decrypter]

"I wish one day I could somehow take it in. To understand it, not just listen - I'm sure it'd teach me more that way. Your city is different from any others I've ever thought to touch."

There's such a long list of places she wants to visit now. Enough to make at least years worth of adventures on their own.

[crushed_pearls]

"...Well, lemme invite you to the mild existential crisis that is me being on this boat: my city seems to only exist on my Earth. No one else here has heard of it."

Because it's Baltimore, she described Baltimore, New Avalon is a historical AU of fucking Baltimore.

"Allowing for the time discrepancies and all? You know I come from further back than you, someone just may not have invented it yet."

Hope springs eternal.
